SharePoint list board view: which columns work and what to test
Short answer: a board view sorts cards into buckets by one column. A Microsoft Q&A answer says that column must be a Choice or Yes/No column. Microsoft's view pages do not cover the board view, so test each change on a copy of your list.
What Microsoft's view page lists
The Microsoft Support page on views lists these types: Standard, Calendar, Datasheet, Gantt, Access, Custom View in SharePoint Designer, and Existing view, plus the modern List, Compact List, Tiles, and Grid options. It does not describe a board view.
Why your column is not in "Organize board by"
A Microsoft Q&A answer says: "due to limitation currently we only use a 'Choice' and 'yes/no' columns in SharePoint online list to create a board view." If your status column is a Text or Person column, that answer suggests changing it to a supported type. Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: make a copy of the list before you change a column type.
Another Microsoft Q&A answer, from a user and not from Microsoft, says turning off "allow multiple selections" on the Choice column made it appear. Treat that as one user's report, and test it on a copy of your list.
Bucket order
Microsoft's pages do not say what sets the order of the buckets. Test it on a copy of your list: change the order of the choices in the column, reopen the board, and see if the buckets move. Do not promise your team an order until you have seen it.
Fix a board that looks wrong
Our advice, not a Microsoft rule:
- Open a copy of the list so your real view stays safe.
- Remove all filters and sorts on the board view, then check the board again.
- Make a second view with a different "Organize board by" column to see if the problem follows the column or the view.
When a different layout fits
If you only need a list sorted by status, a normal view with grouping is simpler. See "SharePoint list gallery view" and "Sort a SharePoint list by more than one column". For task boards across a team, see "Planner vs a SharePoint list".
What to avoid
- Do not change a column type on live data without a copy.
- Do not promise your team a bucket order until you tested it.
- Do not plan a board around a Person column. The Q&A answer above names only Choice and Yes/No columns.
When to get help
You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: $5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "What a SharePoint tracker costs to build". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.
I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.

FAQ
How do I change the bucket order in a SharePoint list board view?
Microsoft's pages do not say what sets the bucket order. Change the choice order on a copy of the list and see if the buckets move.
Why is my column missing from "Organize board by"?
A Microsoft Q&A answer says only Choice and Yes/No columns are supported.
Can a SharePoint list show a kanban board?
Yes. A board view shows items as cards in buckets, the layout people call a kanban.
Why does my multi-select Choice column not show up?
One user on Microsoft Q&A reports that turning off "allow multiple selections" made the column appear. Test it on a copy of your list.
Should I use a board view or Planner?
Use a board view when the items already live in a list. For team task boards, compare Planner and a SharePoint list first.
