Add an image to a Microsoft Forms question

Short answer: select the question, choose the Insert media icon on its right side, select Image, then pick Image Search, OneDrive or Upload. The picture appears to the right of the question.

Add the picture

Exact names may differ on your screen.

  1. Open the form in Microsoft Forms and select the question.
  2. Select the Insert media icon on the right side of the question.
  3. In the Insert media pane, select Image.
  4. Choose one source. Image Search: type a term, select the magnifying glass, pick a picture, select Add. OneDrive: find the picture, select Add. Upload: find the file and select Open.

Microsoft's page says you are responsible for respecting copyright for pictures from search, and that Bing's license filter can help.

Make it larger or zoom

  1. Select the picture next to the question, then select Edit.
  2. The picture displays as Small by default. Select Large to enlarge it.
  3. To focus on one area, select Zoom In, then click and drag, or tap and drag, to center it.

Add alt text

In the same Edit options, select Alternative text for screen readers and type what a screen reader should read when the picture is focused.

Remove the picture

Select the question, then select the trash can icon on top of the image.

Check it before you share

Open the form preview and look at the picture at Small and at Large. Pick the size that keeps the question easy to read, then share the form.

A picture the respondent sends back

That is a different question type, File upload. See "Microsoft Forms file upload is greyed out for outside people".

When to get help

You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: $5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "What a SharePoint tracker costs to build". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.

Tell me what's still manual

I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.
