# Save a SharePoint list as a template

> Where "Save list as template" lives in List Settings, why it can be missing on your site, and what a saved template keeps and leaves out.

Short answer: open the list, go to Settings, then List Settings, and under Permissions and Management select Save list as template. If that link is missing, Microsoft names two causes: a group-connected team site, or custom scripting turned off by your admin.

## Save the template

Exact names may differ on your screen.

1. Open the list you want to copy.
2. Select the Settings gear, then List Settings.
3. In the Permissions and Management column, select Save list as template.
4. In File Name, type a name with no extension. Microsoft says the template is saved with a .stp extension.
5. In Template name, type the title you want to see in the gallery.
6. In Template Description, type a short description. It shows in the details pane when someone selects the template.
7. Choose whether to select Include Content. That adds the items currently in the list.
8. Select OK. On the confirmation screen, select Template Gallery to see the new template.

## Why the link is missing

Microsoft states: "SharePoint group-connected team sites currently don't support list templates." For other sites it says to enable scripting to use list templates. If the option is not there, your admin may have disabled custom scripts. Changing that is an admin setting, so I would ask whoever manages your SharePoint rather than hunt for it.

## What a template keeps and leaves out

- Items: only when you selected Include Content. Microsoft gives a default limit of 50 MB for saving a template with data.
- Security: not saved. Microsoft says to store templates in a secure location.
- Calendar overlays: after you create a list from a template with an overlay, Microsoft says to delete each overlay and add it again.
- Site type: Microsoft says templates work only on the same type of site where they were created. A template from a Teams site can be used on another Teams site.

## Find, edit or delete it later

Microsoft says you need the Manage Lists permission to see the List templates gallery, and site owners have it by default.

1. Select Settings, then Site Settings.
2. Under Web Designer Galleries, select List templates.
3. In the Edit column, select Edit next to the template. Change the details and select OK, or select Delete Item and confirm with OK.

## Use the template on another site

The template is saved to the List templates gallery of the site where you made it. To use it on another site:

1. In the List templates gallery, select the template name in the Name column, then select Save or Save As to download the .stp file.
2. On the other site, open Site Settings, then List templates, and select Upload Document on the ribbon.
3. Select Browse, pick the .stp file, and select OK.

Microsoft says you need Write permission where you save the file and Read permission where you upload it from. If you are moving one list with its rows, compare this with copying the list. See "[Copy a SharePoint list to another site with its data](/guides/copy-sharepoint-list-to-another-site-with-data/)".

## When to get help

You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: \$5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "[What a SharePoint tracker costs to build](/guides/what-a-sharepoint-tracker-costs/)". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.

I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.
