> Copilot in SharePoint can create and edit lists with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. What Microsoft documents, what it omits, and a no-Copilot route.

Short answer: Microsoft's page "Get started with Copilot in SharePoint" says the Copilot capabilities include "Create and edit pages, libraries, or lists," and that users must have "an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license." That page does not show prompts or the columns Copilot builds, so this guide does not list them. Microsoft still labels the feature public preview, with general availability rolling out from September 30, 2026.

## What the Microsoft page says

Source: Microsoft Learn, Get started with Copilot in SharePoint.

- Copilot in SharePoint "brings agentic capabilities into SharePoint so teams can ask questions, run workflows, and create sites, pages, interactive reports, and Office files from their SharePoint content using natural language."
- Preview: the page still says Copilot in SharePoint "is currently in public preview." It says "General availability begins rolling out on September 30, 2026" and "Capabilities may appear in your tenant after that date as rollout progresses." It may not be on your site yet.
- The prerequisite is a "Microsoft 365 Copilot license." The page says everyday capabilities "are included with this license at no extra cost, and no opt-in step is required."

## Where lists fit in

Microsoft's page has a two-column table. The column "Included with the Microsoft 365 Copilot license" lists, among other items:

- "Create and edit pages, libraries, or lists"
- "Create simple rules, approvals, and deterministic workflows"

The column "Requires Copilot Credits" lists, among other items:

- "Create and edit files, pages, libraries, and lists at scale"
- "Create entire sites and solutions"

Microsoft says Copilot Credit use "varies based on the type and complexity of the task and nature and volume of the content involved." It also says that users with credits "are asked to confirm before moving into advanced work that spends Copilot credits."

Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: one new list for a small team reads like the first column, and a job that spans a whole site reads like the second. Where the line sits for your list is a question for your admin.

## What the page does not say

Microsoft's page does not give:

- The name of a "list agent" for lists.
- Example prompts for a list.
- Which column types Copilot picks.
- Whether you can paste a table into the prompt.
- The number of columns or rows it can create.

(delete; sentence starts "If you have Copilot,")If you have Copilot, try one small prompt and read the result. Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: check every column type before anyone enters data. A date typed as text, or a Choice column with the wrong values, is harder to fix after the list has rows.

## What the page says about availability

- Language: Microsoft says Copilot in SharePoint "supports only languages that appear in both the SharePoint Online supported language list and the Microsoft Copilot supported language list."
- Where it is off: the page says Restricted Content Discovery, if enabled on a site, means "Copilot in SharePoint and AI actions don't appear on that site."
- Site owners: the Site AI settings panel lets owners choose which agent opens from the global header, and hide the Copilot button for site visitors. To open it, Microsoft says to go to Settings, then Site AI.
- Government clouds: Microsoft says GCC, GCC High, DoD, Office 365 air-gapped cloud environments, and Microsoft 365 operated by 21Vianet "don't currently support Copilot in SharePoint."
- Admin controls: the page describes tenant settings that an admin manages. Ask your admin if Copilot is missing on your site.

## Which license do you hold

Microsoft's page "License Options for Microsoft Copilot" says Microsoft Copilot "is available with Microsoft 365 E7 or as an add-on for eligible commercial, US Government, and education subscription plans." It lists eligible prerequisite plans, and notes that Microsoft Copilot Business is for organizations with up to 300 users. I have left out prices. Ask your admin which license you have.

## No Copilot: build the list yourself

You do not need Copilot to get a working list. The steps are the same for any tracker.

1. Write the columns on paper first: the name, one date, one person, one status.
2. Make the status a Choice column with numbered values such as 1 Open, 2 In progress, 3 Done.
3. Create the list in Microsoft 365 and add the columns.
4. Add three sample rows and check the form and the view.

If your data lives in a spreadsheet, see "[Import Excel into an existing SharePoint list](/guides/import-excel-into-existing-sharepoint-list/)". For a choice between a spreadsheet and a list, see "[SharePoint list vs Excel](/guides/sharepoint-list-vs-excel/)". For worked column designs, see "[Set up an asset register in SharePoint](/guides/setup-asset-register-sharepoint/)" and "[Set up a vendor list with renewal dates](/guides/setup-vendor-list-renewal-dates-sharepoint/)".

## After the list exists

Copilot or not, the same checks apply.

- Rename the Title column to fit your list. See "[Rename the Title column in a SharePoint list](/guides/sharepoint-list-rename-title-column/)".
- Decide who can see which rows. See "[Show each person only their own items in a SharePoint list view](/guides/sharepoint-list-view-filter-current-user/)".
- If a flow will act on new rows, add a Yes/No column with a default value of No, and have the flow check it, act, then set it to Yes.

## When to get help

You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: \$5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "[What a SharePoint tracker costs to build](/guides/what-a-sharepoint-tracker-costs/)". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.

I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.

## FAQ

### Can Copilot create a SharePoint list?

Microsoft's page lists "Create and edit pages, libraries, or lists" as an included capability of Copilot in SharePoint.

### Do I need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to use Copilot in SharePoint?

Yes. Microsoft says users must have an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

### Does creating a list cost extra Copilot Credits?

Microsoft puts creating and editing lists in the included column and lists doing it "at scale" under Copilot Credits.

### Is Copilot in SharePoint available to everyone yet?

Not always. Microsoft's page still labels it public preview, says general availability began rolling out on September 30, 2026, and says capabilities may appear in your tenant as rollout progresses. It also needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

### Can I hide Copilot on one site?

Microsoft says site owners can open Settings, then Site AI, and hide the Copilot button for visitors. An enabled Restricted Content Discovery setting also hides it.
