> How to turn the new designer off, what the new designer cannot do yet, and how to copy and paste actions inside a flow. Per Microsoft Learn.

Short answer: open your flow and turn off the toggle labeled New designer at the top right. The flow reloads in the classic designer. Microsoft says: "Switching between classic and new doesn't change your flow logic or break anything. It's purely a UI change."

## Switch from new to classic

1. Open [https://make.powerautomate.com](https://make.powerautomate.com) and open your flow.
2. Find the toggle labeled New designer in the top-right area.
3. Turn it off. The flow reloads in the classic designer.

Exact names may differ on your screen.

## Switch from classic to new

1. Open the flow in the classic designer.
2. Find the toggle labeled New designer. If you do not see it, Microsoft says to open the flow from Power Automate, then My flows.
3. Turn it on. The page reloads in the new designer.

## Which designer am I in?

Microsoft's tip: look at the top-right corner. "If there's a toggle enabled that says New designer, you're in the new designer." Microsoft also describes the new one as a vertical top-to-bottom card layout, with a plus button between actions, and the classic one with a New step button at the bottom.

## Copy and paste actions

Microsoft says: "You can copy-paste within the same flow in the new designer, but not across tabs or across flows." The classic designer can copy an action from one flow in one browser tab and paste it into another flow in another tab.

So to move an action between two flows: switch both flows to the classic designer, copy, paste, save, then switch back if you want.

## What the new designer cannot do yet

Microsoft's page lists these gaps in the new designer: copy and paste across tabs or flows; deeply nested conditions (4 or more levels), where "Branches might overlap or become difficult to navigate past depth 3"; and some older on-premises data gateway setups, which "might display differently or require reconfiguration." Test those flows before you fully switch. Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: if something looks wrong in the new designer, open the flow in classic before you rebuild anything.

## Known issues Microsoft lists

- Collapsed branches: a flow with several conditions, loops or switch cases opens with all branches collapsed. Microsoft's workaround: look for an Expand all option in the toolbar or right-click menu, or select each branch.
- Save failing: after you select Save, wait for the confirmation message. Microsoft says if saves keep failing on one flow, open it in the classic designer and save there, then return to the new designer.
- Comments: Microsoft says adding or editing comments can cause save errors. Remove the comments and save again.
- Slow expression editor: on flows with 50 or more actions, write the expression in a text editor first and paste it in.

## Will classic go away?

Microsoft says the classic designer is in maintenance mode: security updates and critical bug fixes, no new features. It also says: "When a timeline is set for the deprecation of the classic designer, it will be communicated in advance." Existing flows keep running no matter which designer edits them.

## What to avoid

- Do not close the browser tab while a save is slow. Microsoft says closing might lose your changes.
- Do not copy an action in one tab and expect to paste it into another tab in the new designer.
- Do not save a long expression with no backup. Microsoft's tip: copy the expression text to a text file before you save.

## When to get help

You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: \$5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "[What a SharePoint tracker costs to build](/guides/what-a-sharepoint-tracker-costs/)". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.

I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.

## FAQ

### How do I switch back to the classic designer in Power Automate?

Turn off the New designer toggle at the top right of the designer. The flow reloads in the classic designer.

### Why can't I copy and paste actions between flows in the new designer?

Microsoft says the new designer does not support copy and paste across tabs or flows. It works inside the same flow.

### Will switching designers break my flow?

Microsoft says it does not change your flow logic. It is purely a UI change.

### Why is the New designer toggle missing?

Microsoft says to open the flow from Power Automate, then My flows, if you do not see the toggle in the classic designer.

### Is the classic designer being retired?

Microsoft says it is in maintenance mode and that a deprecation timeline, once set, will be communicated in advance. I give no date.
