> Delete this plan greyed out or missing in Planner? Only a plan owner can delete it. How to check, what to do if you are not the owner, and how to leave.

Only owners of the Microsoft 365 group can delete a plan, even if you created it. Open the plan in the Planner web app (a Microsoft Q&A moderator says Teams does not offer delete) and ask a group owner to delete it. To clear it from your own list without deleting it, hide it or leave it. Deleting is permanent, so read the warning section first.

## Why the button is greyed out or missing

Planner plans live inside Microsoft 365 groups. For the classic Planner, Microsoft's page says: "Only plan owners can delete plans from within Planner." Who may delete a plan depends on the group, not on who made the plan. Microsoft's page on deleting a task or plan says: "the owners of the Microsoft 365 group are the plan owners." So you can create a plan and still be unable to delete it, if you are only a member of the group.

A Microsoft Q&A answer states the same thing: "If a user with member permission (a non-owner of Microsoft 365 group) creates a new plan in an existing Microsoft 365 group, the user does not have the permission to delete the plan." Another answer says: "Only Group Owners can delete a Planner plan, even if they originally created it."

A thread on the Microsoft Community Hub describes the same confusion. A person made a plan, could not find the delete option, and another reader reported that "Delete this Plan" was there but greyed out. A reply there said only "This may happen with personal plans." That reply is not a full explanation, so treat it as a hint and not a rule.

There is one more cause. A Microsoft Q&A answer says: "Personal plans cannot be deleted; they can only be left, which is why the delete option is not shown." This comes from a Q&A answer, not from Microsoft's support page.

## Signs this is your problem

- You open the plan settings and the delete button is grey, or it is not there at all.
- You can see only a short list of settings.
- You made the plan, but someone else made the group.
- You work from a Teams tab and see no delete choice.
- A coworker can delete a plan and you cannot.

## Using Planner inside Teams

A Microsoft moderator answered a person whose down arrow next to the plan name showed only "Copy link to plan". The answer says: "The Teams interface does not provide an option to delete Planner plans." It calls that behavior "expected and by design" in the Tasks by Planner and To Do app. So in Teams, go to the Planner web app to delete.

## A plan inside a bigger group plan

A second answer in that thread says the plan was "a sub-plan within a larger group plan", so its permissions follow the group's ownership. It says "only the Group Owner has the rights to delete plans within that group" and tells the person to ask the Group Owner to delete it. The two answers in that thread give different causes (personal plan, or sub-plan), so open Plan settings in the web app and see whether Delete this plan appears.

## Purple grid plans come from To Do

The same Q&A thread says a plan with a purple thumbnail with a grid was created in Microsoft To Do. To remove it from Planner, the answer says to delete the list in Microsoft To Do at [https://to-do.office.com/](https://to-do.office.com/), then refresh My Plans in Planner.

## Step 1. Open the plan in the Planner web app

A Microsoft Q&A answer says: "Plan deletion is controlled by Microsoft 365 Group ownership, and The Planner web application, not the Teams UI." So start there.

1. Open Planner at [https://planner.cloud.microsoft](https://planner.cloud.microsoft) in a browser.
2. Sign in with your work account.
3. Find the plan in your plans list and open it.

Teams tabs show the same plan, but the delete choice may not appear there. Exact names may differ in your version.

## Step 2. Look for the delete choice

Microsoft's page on deleting a task or plan describes the new Planner this way: open the plan, select the down arrow beside its name, open the plan details pane, choose More Options, and select Delete plan. For the classic Planner, Microsoft's page says to select the three dots to the right of the plan name, choose Plan settings, then select Delete this plan. Exact names may differ in your version, so look for any choice with "delete" in its name.

If you find it and it works, go to the warning section below before you confirm.

## Step 3. Check whether you are an owner

Microsoft's page says: "If you don't see the option to delete the plan, you may need to be a plan owner." To check:

1. Ask the person who set up the group who the owners are. If you are an admin, Microsoft's page on managing a group says to open [https://admin.cloud.microsoft](https://admin.cloud.microsoft), expand Teams & groups, select Active teams & groups, click the group name, and on the Membership tab choose Owners. Only admins can open that page.
2. If you are not on the owner list, ask an owner to delete the plan, or to make you an owner.

Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: ask in writing, name the plan, and say why it should go. That way the owner knows which plan you mean. Similar plan names are easy to mix up.

## Step 4. If you only want it out of your list, hide or leave the plan

Members cannot delete a plan, but they can hide it or leave it. In the new Planner, Microsoft's page says you can hide a plan from My Plans: on the plan, select More Options, then Hide. "This will only hide the plan in Planner for you; not for anyone else." For the classic Planner, Microsoft's page says: "If you're not the plan owner, you can't delete the plan. Instead, you can leave the plan to remove it from your Planner hub."

For a plan shared with a group, Microsoft's page says you leave by leaving the group. It adds that if you are the owner, "you'll need to make another member an owner of a group before you leave." Leaving does not delete the plan for anyone else. The other members still have it.

## Read this before you delete

Microsoft's page says: "Deleting the plan is permanent and you won't be able to retrieve it." Microsoft's pages do not describe a way to undo the delete of a single plan in the new Planner. For the classic Planner, the page says that deleted groups are kept for 30 days by default, after which they cannot be restored. The page does not say how this applies to your tenant, so check with your admin.

Several community answers also warn that a plan is linked to its group, so deleting may touch more than the plan. Microsoft's pages do not describe this, so ask your admin before you delete a plan that belongs to a team with files and chats.

Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: before you delete, export the plan so you keep a copy of the tasks. See "[Planner Export to Excel option is missing: where to find it](/guides/planner-export-to-excel-missing/)". Then close the plan's open tasks or hand them to someone, and tell the other members.

## What to avoid

- Do not make yourself an owner just to delete a plan that is not yours. Ask the owner.
- Do not delete a plan to "fix" a sync problem. Try the steps in "[Planner tasks not syncing or disappearing in Teams](/guides/teams-planner-tasks-not-syncing/)" first.
- Do not delete a plan that is still used by a team. Members lose their view of it.
- Do not assume a grey button is a bug. Check ownership first.
- Do not delete in a hurry. There is no retrieve step on Microsoft's page for the new Planner.

## A simple habit for the future

Our advice, not a Microsoft rule: when you create a plan for a group, put two people on the owner list. If one owner leaves, the other can still manage and delete plans. Write the plan's purpose in its name or description, so people know what is safe to remove later.

## When to get help

You can build all of this yourself in Microsoft 365. If you would rather have it built and tested for your team, I do that. A tracker like this is a fixed price: \$5,000 for one, built in 2 weeks. See "[What a SharePoint tracker costs to build](/guides/what-a-sharepoint-tracker-costs/)". Bring one example of the problem to a free call.

I am Al Davies. I run 250 High Street LLC and build SharePoint trackers and Power Automate flows for operations teams. I work remotely. The first call is free, and I will not try to sell you anything.
