> Add a star rating column to a SharePoint or Microsoft Lists list. Steps, how the average works, how to switch to likes, and what to check if it is missing.

Open the list, select Add column, and choose Average rating. People then select stars on each item, and the column shows the average of all ratings.

## Does a SharePoint list have a rating column?

Yes. Lists in SharePoint Online and Microsoft Lists offer an Average rating column. It shows a row of stars from 0 to 5 by default. A list can hold one Average rating column.

The column works on lists. Document libraries use a separate ratings setting. Menu names change between tenants, so check your own menu if a step looks different.

## How do you add the rating column?

1. Open the list in your browser.
2. Select Add column at the end of the column headers.
3. Choose Average rating.
4. Select Save. The column appears with the name Rating (0-5).
5. Select the stars on an item to give your rating.

## How does the average work?

Each person gives one rating per item. The column shows the average of all ratings. Where the average falls between two whole numbers, a part of a star shows filled.

When you point at the stars, the list shows your own rating. Open the item details pane to see the number of ratings. The names of the people who rated show there after the first rating.

## Can you use likes instead of stars?

Yes. Open the column settings and switch the style from stars to likes. The column then shows a heart and a count of likes for each item.

Reports from other site owners say that earlier ratings stay when you switch. Test the switch on a copy of the list first. The Rating and Likes columns work on their own, so one does not change the other.

## How do you sort or group by rating?

Select the column header to sort by the average. To group, open the view menu and choose Group by, then pick the rating column.

For a card layout, see our guide on the [gallery view](/guides/sharepoint-list-gallery-view/). For a board by status, see the [board view](/guides/sharepoint-list-board-view/). Both views can show the rating on each item.

## Why does the rating column not show?

1. You are in a document library, not a list. Libraries use a different ratings setting.
2. The list already has an Average rating column. A list holds only one.
3. Your tenant shows a different menu. Open the list settings and look for rating settings.
4. The column is hidden in the current view. Open the view menu, choose Edit current view, and tick the column.

## What if you need a 1 to 10 score or a rating by one person?

The Average rating column is built for many raters and one average. For one score from one reviewer, use a Number column with a rule that limits it to 1 to 10. Our guide on [coloring rows by value](/guides/highlight-overdue-rows-sharepoint-list/) shows how to color a cell by its number.

To collect comments with each score, add a comment on the item. See [comments and notifications on list items](/guides/sharepoint-list-comments-notify-people/).
